Abstract

The purpose of the present investigation was to develop the sustain release matrix tablet of Tinospora cordifolia using the various polymers like HPMC (Hydroxy-Propyl-methyl-cellulose), Ethyl cellulose (EC), of different viscosity grade. Ethanolic extract of Tinospora cordifolia was used for the formulation of sustain release matrix tablet and tablet formulations were developed by using wet granulation method. Different diluents like lactose, magnesium stearate and cab-o-sil were used for improving flowability and compressibility. Binder such as polyvinyl pyrrolidone was used for optimization of the formulations. Sodium starch glycolate was used as disintegrating agent. Pre and post formulation parameters were studied for all the batches. HPMC –KM4 shows better result for matrix tablet in terms of sustain drug release with comparison to different viscosity grade of HPMC and ethyl cellulose. The dissolution study of the Tinospora cordifolia tablets exhibited 99.54% release of total polyphenol.

Abstract

Acetogenin a different class of secondary metabolites was found in various parts of Annona squamosa L. More than 20 different acetogenins were isolated from leaves, bark, fruits and seeds. Cytotoxic and Insecticidal properties of Annona squamosa L. were attributed to acetogenins. More than 13 different alkaloids, several terpenes, kauranes were isolated. Antibacterial activity was attributed to terpenes and kauranes. Seeds of Annona squamosa yielded fixed oil containing hydroxyacids. Seeds were found to contain anti-inflammatory cyclic peptides.

Many pharmacological activities were experimentally reported on extracts of Annona squamosa L., these included Antitumour, Cytotoxic, Antiinflammatory, Analgesic, Antidiabetic, Antioxidant, Larvicidal, Insecticidal, Molluscicidal, Licicidal, Antibacterial, Nutritive, Antihtyroid.

Abstract

Enicostema axillare is well known for its anthelmintic and bacterial activity. In present study dried leaves and ischolar_mains of Enicostema axillare were subjected to exhaustic sequential extraction with four solvent i.e.-hexane, chloroform, methanol and distilled water respectively. All four extracts were studied for in vitro licicidal activity using goat-lice Damalinia caprae (Trichodectidae) as experimental organism. Only n-hexane and chloroform fractions showed statistically significant licicidal activity (p value <0.001, n = 5). Decrease in mean time required to kill the lice was observed at concentration 1% w/w and 10% w/w when compared to 1% lindane solution.

Abstract

Ethanolic extracts of gum resin of Boswellia serrata, bark of Moringa oleifera and leaves of Vitex negundo were subjected to preliminary screening for antimicrobial activity .All ethanolic extracts exhibited significant anti-microbial activity comparable to the standard drug tetracycline. The mixture of all three extracts together in equal concentration shows more inhibitory zone as compared to other extracts.

Abstract

A rapid and sensitive high-performance thin-layer chromatographic (HPLC) method was developed and validated for the quantitative estimation of Curcumin in formulation containing Curcuma longa extracts. Simple extraction method was used for isolation of curcumin from formulation sample. The isolated samples were chromatographed by using RP-HPLC Method on HiQ Sil C18 W 4.6 mm×250 mm i.d. column and detected by UV at 420 nm. The linearity range for Curcumin was 0.4-2.4 mcg/ml with average recovery of 97.57±0.5137. The limit of detection and limit of quantification was found to be 3.0196 and 9.1503 for curcumin respectively.The developed method was successfully applied for the assay of market formulations containing Curcuma longa extracts.

Abstract

Ethanolic extracts of Moringa oleifera and Vitex negundo were taken for anthelmintic activity against Indian earthworm Pheritima posthuma. Various concentrations of both extracts were tested and results were expressed in terms of time for paralysis and time for death of worms. Piperazine citrate (10 mg/ml) was used as a reference standard and distilled water as a control group. Dose dependent activity was observed in both plant extracts but Moringa oleifera shows more activity as compared to Vitex negundo.

Abstract

The stationary phase silica gel G60F254 was selected for separation and the sample was developed using a mixture of Toluene:Ethyl acetate:Formic acid:GAA in the ratio 2:1:1:0.75 v/v as mobile phase. Quantification was carried out at 194 nm for Diosgenin and 280 nm for Levodopa using absorbance reflectance mode. The Rf value of Levodopa and Diosgenin was found to be 0.27+0.2 and 0.61+0.2 respectively. Linearity was found to be in the concentration range of 100 to 700 ng/spot of Levodopa and 600 to 1800 for Diosgenin the correlation coefficient value is 0.9954 and 0.9934. The results of analysis were validated in terms of accuracy and precision. The LOD was found to be 1.03 ng and 5.69 ng of Levodopa and Diosgenin respectively. LOQ was found to be 3.14 ng and 17.25 ng/spot of Levodopa and Diosgenin respectively. The content uniformity test was carried out as per the USP specification. The proposed HPTLC method provides a faster and cost effective quantitative control for routine analysis of Levodopa and Diosgenin.
